Legislator Morton Tours Alden Businesses August 2016
Alden Chamber President Brooks Bowman, Vice President Chris Dowd, Secretary Jenny Urbanski , and Mayor Michael Manicki, served as guides as Erie County Legislator Ted Morton brought his 2016 Summer Tour of small businesses to Alden. Included were stops at Chamber members ACTS & Parkside Cupcakes, Aire-Deb Corporation, Gillen’s Expert Auto, Town & Country Restaurant, Mitchell Greenhouses, and Blackwater Fitness.
The tour began at the Alden Christian Theatre Society detailing the history of the building as a former schoolhouse then mason lodge and its evolution to the resident theatre house in Alden. Unique is that ACTS, a non-profit organization, also houses a for-profit business, Parkside Cupcakes, and together they infuse the Town and Village with a cultural entity not found in many small towns.
The tour continued to the home of Debbie Anstett who owns Aire-Deb Corporation, installer of the Magne-Grip vehicle exhaust extraction systems in fire houses, etc. Debbie is a certified woman-owned business, has patented her own product, and will be expanding her business out of her home into a new building which will be located in Bennington.
The next stop was at Gillen’s Expert Auto. Gillen’s has been in business over 30 years. Owner, Earl Gillen, gave a tour of his shop and an explanation of the technology now needed to repair today’s damaged cars in contrast to when he first began the business. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Town & Country restaurant. Mayor Manicki gave a brief history of Alden’s blackwater baths and discussion, of course, led to the current Village water (or lack of) situation this summer.
After lunch, everyone continued on to Mitchell Greenhouses, where Fred Mitchell and George Mitchell explained the automation processes used to water the plants, mix the correct soil, and control heat and lighting. Growing right now are pointsettias for Christmas and mums for Fall.
The tour concluded with a stop at Blackwater Fitness. Chuck Specht gave a tour of the facility as well as outlined the programs available at the gym.
Every business owner conveyed the Town and Village of Alden as a great place to live, work, and play, their desire to give back to the community either by sponsoring local events or helping neighbors in a snow storm, the frustration with government compliance and competing as the small business in an ever-increasing big box business world, and the need for qualified labor that is willing to work. The Alden Chamber thanks Legislator Morton for coming out to visit the businesses and hear their concerns. Together we can all work to keep Alden – Alive and Growing!
